2014 Oscar Predictions!

While this has proven to be an interesting race, and there’s definitely some chances for some upsets, I’m thinking this race is going to go down much as expected:

Best Picture
12 Years a Slave
American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
Gravity
Her
Nebraska
Philomena
The Wolf of Wall Street

As much as I’d love to see Gravity take this, I just don’t see the Academy going for a sci-fi movie over a movie tackling slavery.  12 Years has been dubbed the “important” movie, even though Gravity will do more for cinema in the future than any other film.

Best Actor
Christian Bale (American Hustle)
Bruce Dern (Nebraska)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Wolf of Wall Street)
Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)
Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)

McConaughey is the big frontrunner here. DiCaprio is the very dark horse here, but I just don’t see any reason that the Academy would want to stop the juggernaut that is Matthew. The only reason would be is if they don’t want to give DBC two acting Oscars, and Jared Leto seems to be more of the sure thing.

Best Actress
Amy Adams (American Hustle)
Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
Sandra Bullock (Gravity)
Judi Dench (Philomena)
Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)

Blanchett has this. No problem. Bullock would be the very long shot spoiler.

Best Supporting Actor
Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips)
Bradley Cooper (American Hustle)
Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave)
Jonah Hill (Wolf of Wall Street)
Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)

Once again, Leto has this.  Abdi is the only potential spoiler if voters really want to give Captain Phillips something.

Best Supporting Actress
Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle)
Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)
Julia Roberts (August: Osage County)
June Squibb (Nebraska)
Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine)

Lawrence and Nyong’o have split the other awards, but the Academy is going to have a tough time giving Lawrence back-to-back Oscars at only age 23. Very unlikely. The big plus for Lawrence is that American Hustle, just like Silver Linings Playbook last year, is nominated in every acting category and Lawrence is the film’s best chance at a win.

Best Director
Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street
David O. Russell (American Hustle)
Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity)
Alexander Payne (Nebraska)
Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave)

Cuaron. No contest.

Best Adapted Screenplay
John Ridley (12 Years a Slave)
Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke & Richard Linklater (Before Midnight)
Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street)
Billy Ray (Captain Phillips)
Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope (Philomena)

With 12 Years not a lock in Best Picture, this is where it will definitely pick up a win.

Best Original Screenplay
David O. Russell and Eric Singer (American Hustle)
Bob Nelson (Nebraska)
Spike Jonze (Her)
Craig Borten & Melisa Wallack (Dallas Buyers Club)
Woody Allen (Blue Jasmine)

Her is the frontrunner, but I’m gonna say the Academy uses this category to give American Hustle (and David O. Russell) an Oscar. It could be completely snubbed otherwise.
